Anchor Glassware
In 1905 Isaac J. Collins and six friends bought the Lancaster Carbon Company after it fell into receivership.
The Hocking Glass Company developed a revolutionary machine that pressed glass automatically which increased efficiency and saved the company during the Great Depression. The new machine raised production rates from 1 item per minute to over 30 items per minute. When the 1929 stock market crash hit, the company responded by developing a 15-mold machine that could produce 90 pieces of blown glass per minute. This allowed the company to sell tumblers "two for a nickel" and survive the depression when so many other glass companies vanished.
Today, Anchor Glass Container Corporation is a leading manufacturer of glass containers with eight glass manufacturing facilities and one mould-making facility. Anchor Glass produces a diverse line of flint, amber, green, and other colored glass containers of various types and designs primarily for the beer, food, beverage, liquor, and consumer product industries.
