Akro-Agate
Akro agate glass was founded in Akron, Ohio, in 1911 and moved to Clarksburg, West Virginia, in 1914. The company manufactured marbles and toys. The company began making other products in 1930s which included vases, lamps, flowerpots, candlesticks, and children's dishes. Most Akro-Agate glass is marked with a crow flying through the letter A.
Alley Agate
Alley Agate Co. was founded by Lawrence Alley in 1929 in Paden City, West Virginia. Many Alley Agate marbles are swirls commonly called West Virginia Swirls and the more desirable marbles feature a flame swirl. In 1949 Mr. Alley sold his marble company which was then renamed to Marble King, and still produces marbles to this day.
Anchor-Hocking
Anchor Hocking was started in 1905 by Isaac J. Collins and six friends who raised $8,000 to buy the Lancaster Carbon Company in Lancaster, Ohio, when it went into receivership. The new company was named for the Hocking River which was near to where the plant was located. In the first year Anchor Hocking made and sold about $20,000 worth of glassware.
Fenton Glass Company
Fenton Art Glass Company is the largest manufacturer of handmade colored glass in the United States. The Fenton Art Glass Company was founded in 1905 by Frank L. Fenton and his brother John W. Fenton in an old glassfactory building in Martins Ferry, Ohio. The brothers began by painting decorations on glass blanks made by other glass manufacturers.
Soon, being unable to get the glass they needed, they decided to produce their own glass. The first glass from the new Fenton factory in Williamstown, West Virginia, was made on January 2, 1907. During the years from 1905 to the 1920's, Fenton design was influenced by the artists at Tiffany and Steuben. In late 1907, Fenton introduced "Iridescent" glass. This glass, now known as "Carnival" glass, is a popular collectible today.
Hocking Glass Company
By 1928, demand continued to grow and Hocking producted the first green machine-made pressed pattern which became known as Depression Glass.
This line of glassware was so successful that The Hocking Glass Company was soon producing larger quantities of Depression Glass in the wide variety of colors and patterns that are sought after by collectors today. Some of the best know patterns were Cameo, Block Optic, Miss America, and Mayfair.
Houzex or Houze-Convex Glass Company
Houze Glass was originally founded as Federated Glass Company in Pennsylvania. Their best known innovation was colored sheet glass.
Houze was successfully innovated an industrial method for manufacturing convex glass that proved useful in lens-making which dominated the market during World War I for military goggles.
Jeannette Glass Company
Jeannette Bottle Works began operations in the late 1880s in Jeannette, Pennsylvania. The company changed their name to Jeannette Glass Company in 1898. They produced a wide variety of handmade bottles, jars and dishware well into the twentieth century.
The company expanded their production to include prism glass in 1917. Prism glass was incorporated in both business and residential structures to increase dispersion of interior light from outside.
The prism making division of the company was sold in the mid-1920s and the factory was converted to a pressed glass facility. Later on this change would enable the company to produce the Depression-era kitchen glass and dinnerware for which they are best known.
McKee Glass Company
McKee Glass Company began operations in 1853 as McKee and Brothers Glass Works, manufacturers of crystal glassware. From the beginning the company
was always ready to produce high volume industrial and decorative glass.
From 1853-1888 the McKee factory was originally located on the South Side of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvannia. Later, following development of extensive natural gas fields, the company moved to Westmoreland County and settled in a town called Jeannette in which was created by the workers at the plant.
The town of Jeannette was named after Mrs. McKee and was founded by H. Sellers McKee, the owner of the McKee plant. Jeannette is located approximately 27 miles east of Pittsburgh.
